The Spelman Family was a Massachusetts family famous for their work with the abolitionists. Laura Spelman became Laura Spelman Rockefeller and used her new wealth to create Spelman College in Atlanta, the famous college for black women.

Then there is the other side of the family .

The Spelman's have a talent for magic and generations of witches have come from this family. Sabrina is the daughter of a Sorceror named Edward Spelman and a mundane woman named Diana. She grew up in Haverhill, MA and graduated from High School in 1962. After High School, she went to live with her Aunts Hilda and Zelda in Salem as she attended Salem State College.

It was while living in Salem that she began to hang out with her cousin Agatha at the Horeb Hall. With her skills in glamors and illusions, she makes it possible for the more inhuman residents to go out into the world.

The Witches' Council
The Witches' Council is the Magical Order desrcibed on page 15 of The Magic Box. The Witch Queen was a powerful woman named Ticheba until 1968, at which time the leader of the Council was proclaimed to be Samantha Spelman-Stephens
Why, When, and Where: The Witches Council is a loose organization that has been the governing body for the magically inclined for centuries. They provide special aid to members, train novice witches in the magical arts, punish those who misuse magic, and keep the whole supernatural underground a secret from the mundane masses.

Salem is Sabrina's pet black cat. Actually, his real name is Saberhagen. He was a powerful sorceror who wanted to overthrow the Witches' Council and bring magic out into the open. His plan didn't work. As a punishment, he was stripped of his powers and turned into a cat.
