With Cards or Player-Determined Outcomes? I think I've done both, and I'm not sure which you encountered.

Cards are okay, if you're playing Poker later, but your option of "10's" goes from 1-in-10 to 4-in-13, giving a better chance of Grand Successes.

Player-Determined is good, if you like games like Everway; if the Player can pull it off, and remain in character, give it to them. The down side is that a particularly gifted Player may do something amazing with their character that is beyond that character's abilities - with frequency. It's a balancing act.

I likey the dice, 'cause it's fairly easy, modifiers can be assigned and/or good Role-playing allowed to surpass roles, and there's an even chance of success or failure. In a pinch? Either optional rule works, though. Edit: More to the point of your questions: 1) They're okay, depending on the players. 2) Not really, as you're still struggling to peek over the table at the Player's Character Sheet while they struggle to find the Skill and Attribute you just mentioned (at least, I am) half the time.
