I've looked online to find a good map that pin-points the exact location of Sunnydale. And I've yet to find one.

I've found a few fan based maps - based on the locations from the TV series. But it still doesn't give an exact location related to Southern California. Also there's some pretty good maps of buildings(like the Sunnydale Zoo, Bronze, & the Factory from the BtVS video games.

And while there was talk of a map of Sunnydale in the Welcome to Sunnydale supplement - we still have no idea when or even if that will ever be released.

So I'll have to do build my own version of Sunnydale.

I think I'm going to do a map of the approximate location of the Whedon'verse version of Sunnydale, as well as my Ultimate'verse version.

In the Whedon'verse version - Sunnydale has a population of about 32,000 - 39,000 people (depending on the season.

In my Ultimate-verse version - the population of Sunnydale is roughly double than - to about 70,000-80,000 people.

I had been thinking of a location for Sunnydale in my Ultimate 'verse - as being near Hollister's Ranch - between Point Conception & Gaviata State Park. But there's still a few things that don't seem to quite fit - such as lack of a Zip Code, Shape of Coastline & lack of a major highway like US 101.

In looking down the coastline towards Santa Barbara - the area between Gaviata & Goleta seems to be a better fit - With US 101 running thru the area, and the general shape of the coastline seems to be more favorable.

As for Zip Codes, they have used both Morgan Hill and Sunnyvale for that, so a bit of a contradiction. Besides, both are too far north.

But then like most fictional towns/cities - Sunnydale's exact location is hard to pin down. Because the various available information given, may conflict with other information given during the series. The best way to get a good approximate location would be to use only information sources that back each other up.

So, if you want to be Whedon-kosher, it's just south of Santa Barbara.

What ?! Put Sunnydale in the Santa Barbara Channel?! Because that what's south of Santa Barbara.

Some sources claim that Sunnydale - actually replaces Santa Barbara itself. Except Sunnydale's population is about 40% of what Santa Barbara's is in 2000. But Sunnydale does have certain things that Santa Barbara has - such as an old spanish Mission, A Zoo, A Natural History Museum, an Airport, a Train Station, a Bus Station, A major highway running thru it, and a major University of California. Like wise - during the series Santa Barbara isn't said even once . In the few county maps shown in the series - the county in which Sunnydale resides is called Sunnydale County, with Sunnydale being the county seat.

Also, the Chumash Nation was located pretty much between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.

Actually all of Santa Barbara & Ventura Counties are part of the original Chumash nation.

there is also the fact that Jane Espenson described Oxnard as being about halfway between where Buffy lives and where Angel lives, which is why they pick a Denny's there to meet.

Yeah - and the Denny's in Oxnard is about 59 miles from the Hyperion Hotel (in Los Angeles). So if it's truely the midway point - then Buffy's house (in Sunnydale) would be 118 miles from the Hyperion Hotel. Also note - this would fit with the idea that Sunnydale is about 2 hours from Los Angeles. But it also means that Sunnydale would be about 20-25 miles west northwest of Santa Barbara.
