If you use common sense, A Field/Shield that has alot of Armor Value but little to no Damage Capacity breaks/Pops when the Damage Capacity is gone when attacks beat the Armor Value. As long as attacks score under the AV the Field/Shield should be ok however.

Oh, I don't even go that far. If you have no Damage Capacity in your magic shield, then your shield goes down on the 1st hit whether it beats the AV or not. The AV never replaces the DC in my mind.

But why? What supports this line of thought, other than how it worked in the previous edition?

I do it that way because it logically follows directly from the way the Shielding Invocation description is written. If your casting of the Shielding Invocation has no Damage Capacity then there is nothing to support the shield when it takes damage, thus it falls immediately no matter how light the damage done is even if that damage is a single point. The amount of Armor Value has no bearing on the issue at all because AV doesn't support the shield, Damage Capacity does.

- In fact, what the write-up does NOT do is lay out what you are describing. You may want to look up the word explicit. There is nowhere in the description that discusses a Shield working without DC. Actually, let's look at this from the opposite direction. Why should a Shield have an AV? Why not have a Shield that is entirely DC? If it doesn't have AV, then there's no "popping" at all. The blow hits the DC, and it's like you have a massive pillow in front of you, absorbs the entire blow, no muss no fuss. Nothing in the write-up requires a Shield to have AV. Why would you ever think it needed it?

Nothing in the system functions to have AV and disappear after being hit (as you describe how you handle DC-less Shields). Nothing in the write up specifically requires them to be married together, nor is there anything textually implying that an AV only shield would fall to any sort of damage. There is nothing at all about 'support' of any kind.

In fact, the text does explicitly state:
"A Physical Shield can have an Armor Value and a Damage Capacity. The Armor Value subtracts from the damage inflicted by an attack. The Damage Capacity acts like a cushion, deflecting some of the energy of an attack but getting weaker with every attack it dissipates."

The clause "Damage Capacity acts like a cushion" is very clearly discussing that DC is the supporting physical structure of the Shield. Dissipate is the word indicating that the Shield will soon go away, you see.
